  • Fat City is Gardner’s only novel. He is also a short story writer, screenwriter, and actor.
  • Fat City was made into a 1972 film of the same title directed by John Huston and starring Stacy Keach, Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell. Gardner wrote the screenplay. Tyrell was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Oma.
